David;

could you email the address you want this chassis sent to:

info@zinky.com

That's the shipping computer. This computer is at my house.

BZ

PS: also had to replace the Mercury Magnetics brand reverb transformer...Which would have been the second MM reverb transformer in your amp we had to replace.

I knew the first one was junk (which is why we replaced it), but I had no idea the second one would fail, too.

We used a Marvel transformer to replace it, which is what we use for every reverb transformer now (No failures in the 5 or 6 years we've used them).

BZ

Oh, joy - actual activity! Ship tomorrow! A second email!

Some harsh words about their transformer suppliers there.

But hang on... what about the silver case? Perhaps I should send yet another reminder of what I'm expecting - see part 56.

Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 49: Call 6

Telephone call on 17 March 2009

Bruce:

  • "Had the camera in his hands"
  • Was getting round to the "non-typical" tasks
  • Was using Nate "as his hands"
  • Took some pictures during the call
  • Explained the procedure required for testing a UK-spec amp
  • Believes reverb is now fixed
  • Will send pictures and get Nate back on it when he returns from lunch

NATE and I will be testing and assembling this right now....

New Superfly board, on top of chassis...

With one of the transformers (Power) used to test the board. Output not shown. Note Power and Standby switches in old Footswtich box.

So my call at least prompted Bruce physically to take a couple of pictures and get them sent to me (see left).

How much more was done "after lunch" I doubt, but there at least is my amp... in bits, on the bench.

But Nate's attention must have been diverted because another two weeks went by and the "shipping information" that I had been assured of on 3 March did not materialise.

Low on patience I called Bruce again - see part 50.

Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 41: Free Update?

From: info@zinky.com
Subject: Re: Resending: Superfly progress in October

Hello David;

This has taken so long, I can't charge for the update any more.

I have the amp on my bench. I have not had the opportunity to finish the amp yet. The problem was that the reverb control wasn't working properly, and I had to take the main circuit board out to get at the circuitry. We haven't made Superfly amps for years, so I had to reset the test systems for testing Superfly amps. I'm going to do my best to get it finished this week, as the sooner it gets done, the sooner I can have that bench back.

Sorry for the delays,

BZ

Suddenly the whole task appears more laborious than the early "nearly fixed it" emails implied.

But Bruce is going to try to get it done within a week and there'll be no charge for the update - that's got to be good?

I still haven't got confirmation on the other requirements though, so I had to send yet another email asking the same thing - see part 42.

Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 39: One Step Back?

Hi David;

Got ahead of myself.

There was an issue with the reverb, where the reverb control wasn't raising the volume smoothly on every setting.
I took the whole amp apart again, re-did the reverb (I think there was a bad solder joint on a relay). I will be testing it and re-assembling this week.

The rest of the amp has been updated to the current specification and works perfectly.

Sorry about the false start,

BZ

Has Bruce identified an old problem more precisely, or is there a new problem. Whatever, it means more work, hence the delays.

At least the rest of it works "perfectly" now.

However, no info on the other aspects of the work that I mentioned in my previous email. A reminder is required yet again - see part 40.

Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 36: Basically Done?

Hello David;

Amp has been finished, and the chassis has been fully tested at 240 VAC, 50 HZ. I will be packing it up for shipping this week. More info to follow.

BZ

Hmm... so everything's done and the new case is ready to install the chassis for shipping back?

I wasn't sure whether everything really had been covered (no pun intended) so I asked for confirmation - see part 37.

Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 34: Not Happy Yet

Hi David;

Amp should have been finished by now, but I was not happy with the performance when I tested it last week.

We're attending to that now.

I'll keep you informed,

Bruce Z

Well, you can't hurry a perfectionist...

At least that's what I put the delays down to at this stage, so my response was consistently appreciative - see part 35.

Hello David;

I should be able to finish your Superfly this week. We've got most of it done, just fitting the work in between regular production.
All updates, improved reverb, more clean headroom.

This one had the reverb fail, then the reverb transformer was replaced. Not by US, mind you, but by Adrian at Orange(!). He's a friend of ours. He had a creative solution to mounting it. Not where we would have put it, but it fits nicely, and won't come loose, so we'll allow it. None of the other updates were performed when the Reverb transformer was replaced, so, it did need some attention. But not to worry- We should be able to ship it this week, or early next.

BZ

This looked OK, "we should be able to ship it this week, or early next" - wow!

Glad they're able to fit the work in, long may that continue.

I wasted no time in expressing my appreciation - see part 33.

Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 30: Working On It

From: zinky@zinky.com

To: david@dave.st

Hi David;

It's an early amp, in the #0030'-0040 range.
Adrian put the upgraded transformer inside, as the original Mercury Magnetics units proved to be total crap.

we are working on it today to bring it up to the latest specifications.

BZ

Here's the first expression of dissatisfaction with the ill-fated reverb transformer, but why worry? Bruce is working on the amp that very day.

Naively perhaps I took this as an indication that the work could be done in the sort of timescale I'd previously imagined.

So I left it a couple of weeks before wondering how they were getting on - see part 31.

Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 28: Arrived Safely

It's Here!

I remember this one. The reverb went out, and Adrian from Orange did the fix. We're going through the wiring and updating everything first. Then, we'll have a listen to it.

BZ

Within a week - some good news. My amp had arrived safely and Bruce "recognised" it - at least by reputation.

The date was 29 April 2008 and Bruce could finally get his hands on it and do the work that we'd been discussing - in effect - for a year and three months.

I had one or two questions that I thought Bruce could answer now the amp was with him so I fired them off - see part 29.
