Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 67: Can It Be True?!

Your Fed Ex tracking number: [big long number]

No charge. Ships today. Chassis is updated and in working order. No cabinet, cannot provide one. I noted that the purpose of the shipping was "Repair and Return" on the commercial invoice as well as the shipping manifest, so you shouldn't need to pay duty.

BZ

Be still my beating heart! Is my amp now in the capable hands of FedEx? Has Bruce had a communiqué from the BBB that was more trouble to ignore than to act on?

Well the tracking number is real enough. Projected delivery date is 10 February.

Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 53: Empty Assurance

I will finish it, and you will pay nothing.

BZ

Obviously whatever Bruce needed to devote all his time to was more lucrative even than a $1,000 bounty on fixing my amp.

So back came an effectively worthless assurance that he would do so at no cost - but when? No time soon it transpired - see part 54.

Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 41: Free Update?

Hello David;

This has taken so long, I can't charge for the update any more.

I have the amp on my bench. I have not had the opportunity to finish the amp yet. The problem was that the reverb control wasn't working properly, and I had to take the main circuit board out to get at the circuitry. We haven't made Superfly amps for years, so I had to reset the test systems for testing Superfly amps. I'm going to do my best to get it finished this week, as the sooner it gets done, the sooner I can have that bench back.

Sorry for the delays,

BZ

Suddenly the whole task appears more laborious than the early "nearly fixed it" emails implied.

But Bruce is going to try to get it done within a week and there'll be no charge for the update - that's got to be good?

I still haven't got confirmation on the other requirements though, so I had to send yet another email asking the same thing - see part 42.

Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 10: Check The Reverb Valve

Hi Dave;

The Reverb tube (small tube nearest the large transfomer and near the RCA jack for Reverb Send) should be a 12AT7 type. a 12AX7 used here might exhibit intermittent behavior. Also, it COULD be a faulty 12AT7. Check that and let me know. If it were something like a bad Reverb transformer, that is covered under warranty and would mean no charge (other than shipping) for the complete upgrade.

BZ

Bruce's reply gave some more information on which tube sent the signal to the reverb, but nothing about the time required to do the upgrade once he'd got the amp.

I went back to the amp, took the back grille off (remember, all this time I'm still using the amp for weekly band rehearsals) and tried to match up his description with the positioning of the valves. See part 11 for my findings.

Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 8: No UK Repairer?

Dave;

Upgrades include everything we know that will improve the Superfly.

UK- I don't know anyone in the UK with the ability who has the time. Adrian from Orange had done one upgrade fix for us (after some famous and clueless amp tech couldn't figure it out). As far as shipping goes, I may be able to get the amp consigned with another cargo to substantially reduce the shipping cost. However, there would be a wait.

If the reverb is not working at all, and all of the tubes are correct and the reverb pan checks out, I will do the upgrade at no charge.

What is the serial number on your Superfly?

BZ

So it seemed like the upgrade could be quite involved... but no-one in the UK was able to do it?

Shipping costs could be minimised subject to a possible wait? At this point I didn't know what waiting was!

Strange question at the end though: I'd mentioned in my first email that I could not find the serial number.

Still, I went back to the amp to have another good look. See part 9 for my response.
