Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 38: Time For Action?

It is now nearly a month since your last email and my subsequent reply has not been acknowledged (both below).

I feel I have been very patient considering that you have had the amp since the end of April. I do not understand what the current delay is in view of your previous assurance that it was fully tested by 19 August.

I would appreciate some action to finish any outstanding work and get it back to me.

Regards,

David

So as of 19 August the amp was all but ready, but more weeks have gone by with no news.

Well suddenly it looks like we're into a slightly different problem - see part 39.

Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 37: Great News?

That's great news. Can I just recap on what I needed / wanted to be done?

- Fix the intermittent reverb;
- Replace the power tubes at $60 cost to me;
- Fit the $100 upgrades which will obviate the need for the retrofit reverb level box as well as other improvements;
- Supply a head-only cabinet with black grille cloth at $290 cost to me (as per your email of 16 April you were not sure if you'd have to recover in black one you had already covered in silver);
- Ship back to me at my cost.

I hope I haven't forgotten anything there. I'm sure looking forward to having the amp back.

Regards,

David

So here's a short but complete list of what I'm expecting - again.

Bruce has had the amp for three and a half months, so none of this should be a surprise, right?

We should really be on the homeward straight, yes? Sadly not - Bruce did not reply to this email at all so a month later I was in a less optimistic mood - see part 38.

Hello David;

Amp has been finished, and the chassis has been fully tested at 240 VAC, 50 HZ. I will be packing it up for shipping this week. More info to follow.

BZ

Hmm... so everything's done and the new case is ready to install the chassis for shipping back?

I wasn't sure whether everything really had been covered (no pun intended) so I asked for confirmation - see part 37.

We're another month down the line, how's it going?

Regards,

David

I acknowledged Bruce's previous email... and then another month went by with no indication of completion.

So I fired off another upbeat enquiry. The reply was - at the time - equally upbeat - see part 36.

Hi David;

Amp should have been finished by now, but I was not happy with the performance when I tested it last week.

We're attending to that now.

I'll keep you informed,

Bruce Z

Well, you can't hurry a perfectionist...

At least that's what I put the delays down to at this stage, so my response was consistently appreciative - see part 35.

That sounds great! More headroom on the Clean mode will be very welcome.

Any clues so far why the reverb was dropping out on me?

Regards,

David

As per my previous email of 19 June, any news please?

Regards,

David

I wasn't quite sure if an actual fix had been done for the reverb so I asked again.

This time I didn't get a reply, so chased them up after another month.

There was no answer in June, so I tried again in July.

Weeks are going by and I'm getting very used to my backup amp, which not surprisingly is giving me no problems at all.

A week after my July email I get a reply - see part 34.

Hello David;

I should be able to finish your Superfly this week. We've got most of it done, just fitting the work in between regular production.
All updates, improved reverb, more clean headroom.

This one had the reverb fail, then the reverb transformer was replaced. Not by US, mind you, but by Adrian at Orange(!). He's a friend of ours. He had a creative solution to mounting it. Not where we would have put it, but it fits nicely, and won't come loose, so we'll allow it. None of the other updates were performed when the Reverb transformer was replaced, so, it did need some attention. But not to worry- We should be able to ship it this week, or early next.

BZ

This looked OK, "we should be able to ship it this week, or early next" - wow!

Glad they're able to fit the work in, long may that continue.

I wasted no time in expressing my appreciation - see part 33.

Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 30: Working On It

From: zinky@zinky.com

Hi David;

It's an early amp, in the #0030'-0040 range.
Adrian put the upgraded transformer inside, as the original Mercury Magnetics units proved to be total crap.

we are working on it today to bring it up to the latest specifications.

BZ

Here's the first expression of dissatisfaction with the ill-fated reverb transformer, but why worry? Bruce is working on the amp that very day.

Naively perhaps I took this as an indication that the work could be done in the sort of timescale I'd previously imagined.

So I left it a couple of weeks before wondering how they were getting on - see part 31.

That's great news! I guess my packaging survived OK.

Now you've seen it, do you have any idea what the serial number was originally (assuming you haven't actually found it after all my searching proved unsuccessful)?

Also I'm more than curious to know what repair Adrian did to the reverb?

Regards,

David

I indulged my curiosity with a couple of questions to Bruce, not that the answers were that important now he had the amp.

The missing serial number is something of a mystery to this day, though.

Bruce's response was plenty encouraging though - see part 30.
