Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 76: Oh Me Of Little Faith

Thank you for the replacement mounting screws which I received today. The Superfly is now back in its original case.

David

Despite my doubts that I'd ever see them, a replacement set of shiny, straight mounting screws turned up in the post this morning. I guess if I ever have cause to take the chassis out of the case again I could use them to reassemble it.

Anyway, seems like a polite thank-you to Bruce is in order.

Zinky Superfly Blog - Part 69: It Was Bound To Happen

From: David Jackson
Subject: Superfly is damaged

To: Zinky Electronics

Thank you for finding the time to ship the chassis. I received it yesterday evening (9 Feb) and my first opportunity to unpack it was a couple of hours ago.

You advised at an early stage of our correspondence that the chassis metalwork was not very stiff and the weight of the transformers was sufficient to cause damage should the amp be dropped on its upper face.

This is what must have happened in transit. Although the outer packaging showed no signs of impact, the chassis is deformed at one end. The fixing bolt at the displaced corner is quite bent. Please see the attached pictures.

The circuit board is also bent but does not appear to have cracked. So for today, just one question: do you think it is safe to power up and try?

David

On the evening of 9 February, the delivery was made - a day earlier than expected but I wasn't able to unpack it until a day later anyway. So the following evening I set up my camera to record the moment for posterity and opened it up.

One of the first things I noticed was that the reverb pan that I'd sent out was missing. Oh well, I had another one (see as far back as part 12).

With the packaging removed and taking a closer look, the next thing I could see was that the chassis was damaged. Oh great.

On 8 February I received an email from the Arizona BBB with a link to their case tracking system. This took me to a message which confirmed that they had been in contact with Zinky (relevant details on the right). Before the fateful email from Bruce? I'd like to think so.

Then the next day my previous email to the BBB (letting them know that some action had occurred) was acknowledged, with the expected request that I keep them informed as to actual delivery. So it's good to know that they took my complaint seriously.

Your Fed Ex tracking number: [big long number]

No charge. Ships today. Chassis is updated and in working order. No cabinet, cannot provide one. I noted that the purpose of the shipping was "Repair and Return" on the commercial invoice as well as the shipping manifest, so you shouldn't need to pay duty.

BZ

Be still my beating heart! Is my amp now in the capable hands of FedEx? Has Bruce had a communiqué from the BBB that was more trouble to ignore than to act on?

Well the tracking number is real enough. Projected delivery date is 10 February.

David;

Sorry about that. As I've said before, the chassis is done. I just need to bolt it into your shipping contraption and get it on the way.

[my home address]

I'll do that today.

BZ

Ah, more apologies but no explanation where the last month went to.

Oh, and no mention of the silver case that should be housing the amp instead of my home-made shipping board.

Time for yet another reminder before Bruce ships me just the chassis. I wonder if that will stop him in his tracks as on previous occasions - see part 59.

Hi Bruce,

That's a pleasant surprise to hear you've done the work.

First up then, my address is:

[my home address]

Second up, please include the reverb pan I shipped out with it. Also I hope you will be shipping the new power tubes and silver-covered case as discussed at some length in February of this year. I am still willing to pay the agreed amounts for the latter two items.

Regards,

David

So, nothing complicated, just a reminder of what I'm expecting and an offer still to pay the agreed price for the silver case as well as the power valves.

That can't present a problem after all this time and discussion surely?

Well as suddenly as Bruce appeared to be focused on the amp again, he dropped it - see part 57.

David;

could you email the address you want this chassis sent to:

info@zinky.com

That's the shipping computer. This computer is at my house.

BZ

PS: also had to replace the Mercury Magnetics brand reverb transformer...Which would have been the second MM reverb transformer in your amp we had to replace.

I knew the first one was junk (which is why we replaced it), but I had no idea the second one would fail, too.

We used a Marvel transformer to replace it, which is what we use for every reverb transformer now (No failures in the 5 or 6 years we've used them).

BZ

Oh, joy - actual activity! Ship tomorrow! A second email!

Some harsh words about their transformer suppliers there.

But hang on... what about the silver case? Perhaps I should send yet another reminder of what I'm expecting - see part 56.

Hello David;

Amp has been finished, and the chassis has been fully tested at 240 VAC, 50 HZ. I will be packing it up for shipping this week. More info to follow.

BZ

Hmm... so everything's done and the new case is ready to install the chassis for shipping back?

I wasn't sure whether everything really had been covered (no pun intended) so I asked for confirmation - see part 37.

Hello David;

I should be able to finish your Superfly this week. We've got most of it done, just fitting the work in between regular production.
All updates, improved reverb, more clean headroom.

This one had the reverb fail, then the reverb transformer was replaced. Not by US, mind you, but by Adrian at Orange(!). He's a friend of ours. He had a creative solution to mounting it. Not where we would have put it, but it fits nicely, and won't come loose, so we'll allow it. None of the other updates were performed when the Reverb transformer was replaced, so, it did need some attention. But not to worry- We should be able to ship it this week, or early next.

BZ

This looked OK, "we should be able to ship it this week, or early next" - wow!

Glad they're able to fit the work in, long may that continue.

I wasted no time in expressing my appreciation - see part 33.
